What I'll Make Sure You know during your Consult

During our initial consultation, my goal isn’t to “sell” you on therapy — it’s to help you thoughtfully decide whether working together feels like the right fit. Therapy works best when there’s clarity, alignment, and realistic expectations from the beginning.

Here are the things I will clearly walk you through so you’re not left guessing:

1. My Areas of Specialization

I’ll be upfront about what I specialize in — and what I don’t. No therapist is the right fit for everyone. I’ll share the populations and concerns I most commonly work with, the training that supports that work, and whether your specific concerns fall within my scope of competence. If something feels outside my wheelhouse, I’ll say so directly and help guide you toward someone who may be better suited.

2. Fees, Insurance, and Financial Expectations

By the time we meet for a consultation, I will already know whether I’m in-network with your insurance plan. If I’m not, we’ll talk clearly about my rate and what therapy would realistically look like financially.

Financial stress is one of the most common reasons people discontinue therapy prematurely. I want this process to feel sustainable — not like something that creates additional pressure.

3. Options for Financial Flexibility

If applicable, I’ll explain whether I offer reduced-fee options and whether I provide superbills for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Many clients don’t know to ask about this, and you deserve to understand all available options before making a decision.

4. My Experience with What You’re Going Through

You deserve transparency about my experience working with the challenges you’re facing. I’ll share whether I’ve worked with similar concerns before, how I conceptualize them, and what treatment might involve.

If your needs fall outside my expertise, I will be honest about that and help you think through what type of support or specialist might serve you best.

5. The Therapeutic Approaches I Use

I’ll explain the specific modalities I work from and why I use them. Therapy works best when you understand how we’ll be working together — not when everything feels vague or undefined.

We’ll talk about whether our work will include structured skill-building, cognitive and behavioral strategies, emotional processing, insight work, or a blend — and how those approaches align with your goals.

6. My Overall Therapeutic Style

I’ll describe my therapeutic style, which is a blend of change-focused and process-oriented work. Some clients want clear tools and measurable shifts. Others need space to slow down, reflect, and understand patterns more deeply.

I believe both are valuable, and I’ll help you understand what working with me typically feels like so you can notice whether that style resonates.

7. What Therapy Might Look Like Over Time

If you’re not looking to be in therapy indefinitely, we can talk about structure and timelines. Some clients prefer goal-oriented, time-limited work. Others choose longer-term support for deeper or more complex concerns.

We’ll discuss what makes sense for you and how we might revisit goals over time. Therapy shouldn’t feel open-ended unless that’s an intentional choice.

8. How We’ll Know Therapy Is Helping

Finally, we’ll talk about progress. What changes are you hoping to see? What would feel different in your daily life? What would tell you this is worth your time and investment?

We’ll identify markers of growth and check in regularly. You shouldn’t have to wonder whether therapy is working - and if it isn’t, we adjust.

A consultation should leave you feeling informed, respected, and empowered to choose — not pressured. Therapy is an investment of time, energy, and vulnerability. You deserve clarity from the start.
