Blue Moon Ice Cream

If you know me, you know I bring stuff for the families and children I photograph.  Candy, suckers, bubbles, magic wands.  You name it, I bring it...  One day, though, there was a totally different taste sensation.  I surprised them all with... BLUE MOON ICE CREAM!!

Now, you may be asking yourself, what is Blue Moon Ice Cream?

Blue Moon is an ice cream flavor with bright blue coloring available almost exclusively in the Upper Midwest of the United States. The Chicago Tribune has described the ice cream as "Smurf-blue, marshmallow-sweet, and tasting remarkably like Froot Loops and Fruity Pebbles". .[1]

Blue Moon is found mainly in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

Well, I am a kid from Michigan, I currently live in Minnesota.  Yep, I'm a Blue Moon lover, and to be honest, it's my favorite flavor.  (and the kids around me always think it's funny to see an adult eating bright blue ice cream!)

Since it's hard to find, I wanted to share my homemade version of it.  To make this you will need a 1.5 quart ice cream freezer.

Blue Moon Ice Cream

2 Cups Heavy Cream

1.5 Cups Whole Milk

3/4 Cup White Sugar

1 t. Orange Extract

1 t. Lemon Extract

1 t. Raspberry Extract

Blue Food Coloring.

Mix the Heavy Cream, Whole Milk and Sugar in a large bowl until the sugar is dissolved.  (I use my blends, mixes it SUPER fast!)  Add the extracts and enough blue food coloring to make it the color that you want.  Chill 2 hours or over night.  Freeze according to the directions on you ice cream maker.

ENJOY!  Once you make this, leave me a note what you thought.  I taste this and I'm right back to Sherman's Ice Cream in beautiful South Haven, Michigan.

This took me straight back to Calder's Dairy in Lincoln Park, MI. I haven't had blue moon in 40 years. I'm so happy to have this recipe.

I found this entry the other day. I grew up and lived in Southwest MI until 5yrs ago. Blue Moon was our favorite. We were hating that we couldn't get it in the South. Made this today and everyone loved it. It does really taste like Blue Moon. Many Thanks!!!

I think I just found my piece of heaven. I am a Wisconsin native, now living in Georgia. When I asked people where to get Blue Moon ice cream, I got the weirdest looks. I dreamed of the day I would find this recipe. Thank you so much for posting this!! :-) :-) :-)
