Senior Portrait Tips for Guys
I do know photographers that will only shoot High School Ladies! I can't do that, I have both a son and a daughter. While lots of tips apply to the women (bra straps, makeup, mani and pedi's, etc!), this blog is specifically about the guys!
Let's start at the beginning -
1. Clothes - Make sure your clothes are clean and ironed, nothing looks worse than a wrinkled button down! Bring your clothes to your session on a hanger. Make sure they fit well. You won't feel your best in clothes that are too tight or too loose. Try them on at least a week or two before your session. Mix up your looks, bring a team uniform, but avoid big logo's on your clothes. Nothing says Advertisement like a BIG Nike swoosh across your chest. This is a one in a lifetime event, bring your best and have pics you're proud of.
Avoid the striped polo, seriously, just don't do it. Nothing says, "Middle aged Dad" faster that a striped polo. If you are into polo shirts, bring a solid color one along with a great button down.
Avoid stripes and busy patterns, they don't photograph well!
2. Accessories - Trade out your regular tennis shoes for a great loafer or boot. I LOVE the look of leather Oxfords or a pair of Bucks. Are you going for a fun theme? Try suspenders, a tie and a pocket square in a coordinating color. And what about your sports watch (Apple, Fit Bit, Garmon, etc) Borrow your dad's classic leather watch for a timeless look.
3. Hair - If you're planning on a fresh cut for your portraits, get it at least a week prior to your session. Don't forget your facial hair!!! If you're clean shaven and you get a 5 o'clock shadow , shave the morning of your session. I can't tell you how many times guys have come with a scraggly look only to say, "Cara can fix it in Photoshop" (yes, I can, but there is a fee!) If you have facial hair, make sure it is trimmed and well groomed.
4. Hands - Guys tend to be active and their hands show it. Spend some time cleaning your nails and shaping them, if necessary. Don't forget to give them a little friendly love with handcream.
