A New Venue Space
I recently had the pleasure of touring a new wedding and event venue in North Minneapolis called The APT. A lovely warm space owned and hosted by Chris Villegas. This space was made to host a variety of events from small weddings, showers, birthday parties, corporate dinners, etc. Whatever you can dream, Chris can make it come true.
I imagine beautiful baby showers or reveals, and Chris thought of everything. There are lights that change color surrounding the windows. Imagine everyone's excitement when the room suddenly glows a beautiful pink (or blue!) If you want to host a Christmas party at the APT, the lights can be red and green!
Chris designed this place and the subtle nuances add a touch of class and elegance. In relaxing tones of gray, blues and green with soft wood tones, the color scheme goes well with the signature brick walls (likely Chaska Brick based on when it was built.)
Q & A with Chris
Q: How did you decide to own a venue space?
A: I have been throwing events and parties for friends and family for as long as I can remember. Back when I was a kid, my neighbor wanted to be a DJ when he grew up so he used to have “dances” at his parents’ house and would invite all the kids in the neighborhood. I would partner with him and would be in charge of marketing. This consisted of creating flyers, printing them out and putting them up all over the neighborhood so all the kids in the hood knew where and when the party was. I think I called it the “Party House” which looking, back, was not very creative at all, LOL.
Since then, I’ve been hosting parties at my house and at other peoples’ houses for all sorts of occasions. I also used to be on the Target LGBTA Business Council when I was an employee and headed the Community Relations and Events pillar. I was on the committee for 6 years and also headed to the Pilar for 3 years planning the annual Pride kickoff event for the entire company. It was quite the job but twice the fun! As fun as all of this has been in life, I finally decided that it’s what I truly love to do and it’s taken me 37 years to figure that out.
Q: What did you do prior to this and are you still doing it?
A: Prior to opening my event space, I was a Sr. Mobile Device Engineer for Target Corp. To break it down in its simplest form, I worked on multiple hardware platforms that team members used across the Distribution Center chain that included handheld computers, vehicle mounted computers, voice picking devices and wearables. I also used to assist with wireless site surveys when we opened new buildings or introduced new hardware. It was heavily IT driven. At the end of my career there, I started to dabble in coding software and helped build a print management solution that our client support center would use to help fix broken printers. It was rewarding. Do I still do IT and engineering? Not quite. I no longer work with hardware but I do use my experience and knowledge in software development to help with the business and my website.
Q: What’s your ideal event for your space to host?
A: That’s a tough question. Given the fact that I haven’t hosted an event yet, I can’t pick one in particular. Thinking about the future, I do think the event that I’m most excited to try out is a wedding. My space is not the most ideal for a wedding since it’s so small but I know it’s one of the events that couples look forward to the most. I've attended many weddings in the past and it always makes me so happy to see them so happy!
Q: What is your favorite ice cream flavor and why?
A: Plain Vanilla. Why? Because it’s so versatile. You can add just about any flavor to make it the flavor you want and it goes well with sprinkles. There’s something about the simplicity that makes me gobble it all up!
