Family Portrait Tips!
Is this beautiful weather making you think it’s time to get outfits ready for your session? I HOPE SO! Putting outfits together is something I love to do, and since a lot of my clients absolutely HATE IT, I thought I’d send some tips to get you inspired! Remember you can always send me your ideas and I’ll help you out! So let’s get started!
TIP 1: Find 1 piece of clothing to be the inspiration for everything else. This piece should be a print/pattern, with 2-5 colors. Think a dress for mom, for example! Then pull from the colors in the inspiration piece for everyone else! That’s the easiest way to find your color palette.
TIP 2: Don’t be afraid to mix prints and patterns. For example, If mom is wearing a floral dress with a tight floral print (meaning the flowers are very small in the print), then it actually looks great to have one of the daughters wearing a polka-dot print, or stripes. If only one person is wearing a print/pattern, and everyone else is wearing solid colors, it doesn’t look as natural as if you mix a few prints/patterns together. Chambray is also a great neutral that adds texture to the look.
TIP 3: Dads will ALWAYS look good in a button up shirt. Even in the Summer months, they can roll their sleeves, or wear short sleeves, but it’s always a win and always looks good.
Tip 4: After you choose your outfits, put everything on top of the bed next to each other, and make sure nothing is clashing. If you want, send that picture to me so I can give you my professional opinion!
Tip 5: Do NOT, and I repeat, DO NOT wear jeans and matching colored shirts. I’ll send you straight home if you do!!! The matchy matchy look can sometimes be ok if you’re at a beach and all wearing white linen, but even then, there’s art to putting those looks together, so just don’t do it.
I can’t wait to get you in front of my camera soon!
